Andreas ?gren, 76, is a kite enthusiast from Sweden. On April 17, at the Weifang International Kite Festival, he was skillfully controlling the kite string, focusing on keeping his kite airborne among hundreds of others. He is passionate about designing, making and flying his own kites. However, what fascinates him most are the traditional kites of Weifang. It was his first visit 25 years ago that made him deeply impressed by the craftsmanship of making traditional Weifang kites.
"I first came to Weifang for the Kite Festival 25 years ago," he told a reporter from Haibao News."All in all, I have been here a total of 15 times."
When asked why he comes to Weifang so frequently, he stated frankly that the Kite Festival brings friends from all over the world together."I have many friends here. The Weifang Kite Festival gathers kite lovers from around the globe. That’s why I love coming here to fly kites, meet old friends from both China and abroad, and make new ones as well. This means a great deal to me."
Andreas has been retired for 13 years, and his daily life is spent with kites on the beaches of Bali.He says the kites he designs and makes every day have a relatively simple structure and cannot compare with the traditional Weifang kites he holds dear.
"I love the traditional Weifang kites the most."Andreas still clearly remembers his first visit to Weifang 25 years ago, when he toured Yangjiabu."We walked along the long street. Every household was a small kite shop or a family-run kite workshop. I was amazed that so many people were engaged in this craft."
Nowadays, designing, making and flying his own kites is what fascinates him most."It is not just a hobby, but a passion. It is something I do every day."In his view, making Western kites requires far less skill than crafting traditional Chinese kites."To make a Chinese kite, you need to paint on paper, so you have to be a good painter. You also need great skill to shape and adjust the bamboo.Western kites, by contrast, are made with carbon fiber or fiberglass, which do not demand the same level of craftsmanship."
On the flying field, he was dressed in bright orange, with the word “Windman” printed on his back.Andreas is truly a chaser of the wind."Every time I design and make a new kite and fly it for the first time, it feels like falling in love all over again."
